Father's Day doesn't land on the same date everywhere — which can make planning a little confusing, especially in international families.

Here's a quick look at when it falls in 2026, and where the tradition actually comes from.

When is Father's Day in 2026?

Dates vary more than most people expect. Here's a quick look at when some countries celebrate:

  • US, UK, France: third Sunday of June — in 2026, that's 21 June
  • Spain + Italy: 19 March (St Joseph's Day)
  • Germany: Ascension Day — a Thursday, 40 days after Easter, so the date shifts each year
  • Austria: second Sunday of June
  • Switzerland: usually first Sunday of June (Ticino follows 19 March)

If you're planning across borders, it's always worth a quick double-check — traditions can vary even within a country.

Where does Father's Day come from?

Father's Day actually has two separate roots.

The older one is European: in Catholic countries, fatherhood has been honoured on 19 March, the feast day of Saint Joseph, for centuries.

The modern June tradition traces back to the early 1900s in the United States, where Sonora Smart Dodd campaigned for a dedicated day to honour fathers. The idea spread internationally over time, and today the third Sunday in June is by far the most widely observed date worldwide.

Both traditions still coexist — which is why some countries celebrate in March and others in June.
