Story context

About this series

Who was Mary Anning?

Mary Anning was a pioneering fossil collector and self-taught paleontologist from Lyme Regis, England. In the early 1800s, she searched the cliffs of the Jurassic Coast and studied remarkable marine fossils, including ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. Her discoveries helped scientists understand that life on Earth had changed over deep time.

Because Mary was a working-class woman, her expertise was often under-credited during her lifetime. Today she is recognised as one of the most important figures in the early history of paleontology.

Why this story matters

Mary Anning's life gives children a way into science through curiosity, patience and observation. Fossils are mysterious enough to feel magical, but real enough to open questions about oceans, extinct animals and the history of our planet.

Her story also shows that important discoveries can come from people who are not always invited into the room. That makes Mary Anning a strong heroine for a book about courage, careful thinking and trusting what you notice.

What children can learn

This series can introduce children to fossils, extinct sea creatures, the Jurassic Coast and the idea that science changes when people find new evidence. It also supports bigger themes: asking good questions, looking closely, keeping notes and staying curious even when others doubt you.

Mary Anning's work is a reminder that discovery often starts with a simple habit: noticing something small and wondering what it means.

Characters

Mary Anning

Mary Anning

Marry Anning is an English fossil collector, dealer, and palaeontologist. She is practical, brave, observant, and deeply patient. She knows the cliffs, tides, rocks, and fossils better than anyone, but she is often underestimated by wealthy collectors and formal scientists.

Pip

Pip

Pip is the sidekick: a bold gull who follows Mary and Finn along the shore. Pip cannot talk, but he has a big personality. He steals biscuits, drops shells, squawks at danger, and sometimes accidentally helps by noticing something from above.

Finn

Finn

Finn is an 8-year old blonde boy from the UK, who lives near the beach and is fascinated by Mary’s work. He is energetic, impatient, funny, and emotionally direct. Across the series, he becomes more careful and scientific, learning to sketch, measure, compare, and keep notes.

The Skull Beneath the Storm

After a fierce night of wind and rain, young Finn races to the shore where Mary Anning is already waiting, determined to see what the storm has revealed. On the windblown beach, Mary patiently teaches Finn the careful, scientific ways to search among fallen rocks and slippery seaweed. Hidden in a broken slab they unearth a row of dark, sharp teeth and the long skull of a giant ichthyosaur. When a wealthy collector arrives and doubts Mary’s expertise, Finn learns the power of speaking clearly and standing by what you know. As the tide rises, Mary must choose which fragile bones to save and which must stay safe in the cliff. At lamplight that evening, the pair clean fossils and dream of ancient oceans, proud of their discoveries and Mary’s quiet confidence.
